A great chapter in Indian Hockey came to an end with the demise of Mohammed Shahid. Considered as one of India's greatest hockey players, he was a member of the Indian team that won the gold medal at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow. Inspiration to many, he passed away on 20th July 2016 in Gurgaon.
Born on 14 April 1960 in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, Shahid came into light at the age of 19 in 1979 while playing against France at the Junior World Cup. His showed promising skill same year in a four-nation tournament in Kuala Lumpur earning accolades from his captain Vasudev Baskaran. After impressive performance in the Aga Khan Cup and Champions Trophy in Karachi where he was awarded the 'Best Forward player', Shahid was selected for 1980 Summer Olympics. He was a member of the team that won the gold at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, silver at the 1982 Asian Games and bronze at the 1986 Asian Games. Remembered for his running ability and dribbling skills, his partnership with his teammate Zafar Iqbal was well known. He captained the Indian team during 1985–86. Shahid was awarded Arjuna Award in 1980–1981 and Padma Shri in 1986. After his successful sporting career he joined Indian Railway as sports officer.
Illness and Death
Suffering from severe liver malfunction, he died on 20th July 2016 in Gurgoan. He was 56. Shahid is survived by his wife Parveen Shahid and twin children Mohammad Saif and Heena Shahid.
